I recently found myself talking about this with my 26-year-old stepson.

He is at one of those thresholds in life where every option seems consequential and slightly hypothetical. He is thinking about the transition from studying to professional life. Whether more academia would help. Whether another apprenticeship would be useful. Whether more learning would create momentum – or merely postpone the frightening moment when theory has to become a life.

We also talked about problem-solving and the anxiety of not knowing whether you are doing enough.

It was a typical stepfather-and-son conversation: life, studies, money, work, cars, decisions, gentle interrogation disguised as wisdom. The kind of conversation where one person is attempting to compress several decades of avoidable mistakes into advice, while the other politely considers how much of it needs to be taken seriously.

And somewhere in the middle of it, I told him:

Be intentional about what you do. Exert taste and judgment in what you create. Do not move merely to burn energy. Do not spend money simply to feel that life is advancing. Do not assume that another course, another credential, another plan, or another round of preparation necessarily moves you closer to the life you want. Try to distinguish motion from progress.

He looked at me and, with all the astonished Gen Z respect he could muster, said:

“That’s deep.”

Which is perhaps the highest available rating from a 26-year-old.

But the truth is that I was not merely speaking to him.

I was talking to myself.

Because I have often chosen movement over decision. I have researched when I needed to commit, refined when I needed to release. Built elaborate structures around questions that might have yielded to one painful, honest answer. I have mistaken the expenditure of energy for evidence of direction.

Many of us do.

Psychology has a name for part of this: action bias. Faced with uncertainty, we often prefer doing something over doing nothing – even when action is unlikely to improve the result. Effort is visible. Waiting, reflecting, choosing, and stopping are harder to display. Motion reassures us that we are not passive, even when it is taking us nowhere in particular.

Philosophy has been worrying at the same problem for much longer.

Aristotle distinguished activity from telos: the ends toward which an action is directed. The Stoics were less interested in frantic exertion than in right action – doing what the situation and one’s character actually required. Taoist thought warns against force without alignment. Buddhism examines our restless habit of becoming: the hope that one more achievement, possession, identity, or transformation will finally resolve the unease beneath all the movement.

Different traditions, similar suspicion: Not everything that moves is going somewhere.

The harder question, then, is not simply whether we moved. It is what we measured the movement against.

Progress requires a reference point.

Objectively, that is a question of measurement. Where were we before? Where are we now? What changed?

Personally, it’s a question of meaning.

Some people call it purpose. That word can feel too grand, as though every Tuesday morning must be linked to a heroic destiny. But meaning can be smaller than that. It can be the gravity you resist when you get out of bed. The person you become slightly more capable of being. The work you finish rather than endlessly perfect or that on over-due conversation you finally have.

Progress can be very small. In fact, it often is: A clearer decision, a repeated habit. A page written or a boundary held. A deployment that removes one real obstacle. Sometimes it feels like a day lived with slightly more intention than the day before.

Small progress compounds. Motion merely happens.

AI has made motion dramatically easier: More drafts. More demos. More specs. More prototypes. More backlog items. More product ideas. More summaries of the product ideas. More little rectangles moving across little boards, quietly suggesting that history itself is being managed through Linear.

And to be fair: some of this is good. Necessary, even.

AI is real. The shift is real. The opportunity is real. The ability to move from an unfinished thought to something tangible has expanded opportunity for many dramatically. More people can build, test, write, design, and create without waiting for an entire institution to assemble around them first.

But there is a trap hiding inside all this new agency. AI makes motion cheaper. It does not automatically make progress easier.

I am not saying this from some clean, enlightened distance. I have spent years – decades, probably – mistaking one for the other. In work, relationships, in creative projects. In the many elaborate systems a person can construct around a problem while carefully avoiding the part where the problem actually has to give.

I know how that seduction feels from my own practice at Apes on fire. Another agent loop. Another runtime improvement. Another schema tweak. Another “this might unlock everything” moment at 11:47 p.m., with too much coffee and not enough humility.

Some of that motion is essential. Building is iterative. And momentum and energy, flow and tension are deeply dependent on each other. You often have to move before you can understand the terrain. A prototype can reveal the real question. A failed experiment can be progress if it reduces uncertainty. The quicker you move, the sooner you figure out the what ‘up’ means. Sometimes the only honest route forward is through a small mountain of things that did not work. Generalized hill climbing.

But not all movement adds up.

That is the uncomfortable part.

The distinction between motion and progress is not especially hard to see. It is hard to accept:

Motion asks what we did. Progress asks what changed.

Motion is the sprint, the specification, the pull request, the lovingly over-engineered architecture diagram that made perfect sense at midnight and considerably less sense in the morning.

Progress is the dent.

The shift in the system. The user behavior that changed. The decision that became clearer. The product that became more useful. The idea that survived contact with reality.

No dent, no progress.

This is particularly important in AI because the surface area for theater is enormous. A clickable demo can look like a capability. A hard-coded workflow can look like intelligence. A synthetic answer can look like understanding. Readiness can be mistaken for transformation.

But those are not the same things.

A prototype asks: can we imagine the experience?
A proof of concept asks: can we build the actual capability that works?
A real product asks: does it continue to deliver results with actual people, messy inputs, limited resources, strange edge cases, and nobody standing beside it explaining what it was supposed to do?

Progress asks the least glamorous question of all: Did anything become meaningfully better?

Motion is generous. Progress is judgmental.

Motion lets us feel responsible without exposing us to a verdict. It lets us feel ambitious without choosing a direction. It lets us feel brave without risking the discovery that our chosen direction may be wrong. It allows us to remain in the warm, humming comfort of almost-change.

But nothing good ever happens in comfort zones.

True progress requires more discipline. It requires us to name what meaningful difference would actually look like. Only then can we see and measure the gap. Seeing progress asks us to stop celebrating the swing when nothing moved, to admit that some beautiful activity was just noise with a better font.

Most painfully, progress requires restraint.

The restraint not to start another thing before the current thing has changed reality. The restraint not to confuse a clever artifact with a solved problem. Or to hide inside preparation when life is asking us to choose.

That is why progress is rare.: because it asks hard things from us: direction, consequence, taste, judgment, and the humility to be measured by reality.

Motion is seductive because it feels like becoming.

Progress is harder because it actually requires us to become.
